Positive role modelling is an important aspect of parenting.

Being a good role model ourselves as parents is key. Key to nurturing the right values in our children.

However, positive role modelling does not only come from parents. There are teachers, friends, perhaps well-known personalities, other members of the family…

Role models could be anyone who can inspire children to be the best they can be.

The key is to pay attention to the positive role modelling you want more of.

Notice what or who your children connects with in a positive way. And then encourage more of it. You’ll be on to a winner.

Say your son enjoys being on his bike. He has an uncle who cycles too, whom he admires. His uncle has cycled across Europe to raise money for sick children. Maybe he could see his uncle more often? Maybe even do a cycle trip together…

Say your daughter loves slugs and spiders (mine does!) An idea could be to read a biography of David Attenborough to her once a week…Books and especially biographies are great sources of role modelling. I’m going to try this.

Imagine encouraging relationships with people who share the same passions as your child…

It would inspire and multiply their motivation to learn.

Challenge

Write down up to 5 people (excluding yourself) who could be a role model for your child. They could either exist in your child’s life already. Or be someone you feel your child would connect with and be inspired by.

Now write down as many ways you could extend these relationships. Over the next few months, try to put them into action.
