Dainik Bhaskar, India’s leading online Hindi Newspaper, has initiated Comics for Change, a series of comics launched on World Environment Day (June 5th) to spread awareness of the Global Sustainable Development Goals.

Comics are a great way of reaching children around the world to educate them about some key environmental issues.

Children engage with comics. They love reading about superheroes. Comics appeal to a child’s imagination of what is possible. Comics have a heritage of the underground and the revolution.  They go against the grain and challenge the status quo.

They can inspire change.

The first Comics for Change issue, “The case of the missing water” looks at the problem of water shortage and how children can help. Every day, 350 million people in India do not get access to water. On the other hand, Indian people who have more privilege, overuse water half as much as they need.

The second and third in the series will look at responsible consumption of food and electricity.

It is critical to educate young people in India (and around the world) about such key environmental issues. Danik Bhaskar quote there are more than 500 million people under 20 years old in India.

A shift in behaviour at this level would have tremendous impact.

I admire what India is doing in this regard. The Comics for Change initiative was backed up by Comic Workshops in 400 schools across India to spread awareness about the need to use water more responsibly. It is really inspiring and I think all countries can learn from what they are doing with comics.

Read the first Comics for Change issue here and please share this to spread the message and raise awareness of this important issue.

(Thank you to Abhijeet Kini, the brilliant illustrator of this series, for permission to use his images. Thank you also to Dainik Bhaskar, the newspaper, and Disha Shenoy Kini, for his script on the comic for a great storyline)
