Child friendly news is critical. There is a lot of bad stuff happening out there. We don’t want to hide it from children. However, news does need a filter to make it age appropriate and digestible.

News in general is important to help children be aware of current global affairs. Of course, the last thing we want to do is ram doom and gloom down children’s throats.

Apart from feeding them general knowledge, a regular dose of news serves to engage children with topical, real things that matter.

Things they might end up caring about or even helping one day.

News can also broaden a child’s interest, expose them to different points of view and cultural standpoints. It can increase empathy for other people’s situation. It can also help a child form stronger opinions about what they believe in. This is especially so if a parent discusses with the child what they are learning about in the news.

Two child-friendly news services that are worth a look.

  1. The Day

A great daily news service for your home. You can discuss stories together and inspire your child to think for themselves and engage with the world. I know that students at my school have really enjoyed reading the paper-based version of The Day. I can recommend it on that basis.

2. 1 World News

A new global newspaper for children to learn about social and environmental issues of the day. It is packed with useful and informative articles and is visually appealing to children.

Why not give one of these a try?
